CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- This week marks three years since the first case of COVID-19 was detected in North Carolina. For the first time, the United States government is giving an official report of where the deadly virus might have originated.

Over the weekend, the United States Department of Energy released an update to its previous report evaluating the virus’ origins. The report states the virus likely came from a lab in the Wuhan province in China. This report is labeled as “low confidence,” citing lack of concrete evidence. This is due, in part, due to the U.S. government’s lack of access to raw data, according to officials.

The updated report from DOE backs up an earlier report by the FBI, which came to the same conclusion with “moderate” levels of confidence.

The Chinese government continues to deny allegations of a leak from the Wuhan lab.
