CHAPEL HILL, N.C. —  Last week, the UNC Board of Governors adopted a policy barring schools from asking student and employee candidates about their political beliefs.

The board approved the policy by a unanimous vote and comes shortly after N.C. State University removed a question about diversity from their undergraduate application.

The question has been on N.C. State’s undergraduate application since 2021. N.C. State was criticized for the question earlier this month by Carolina Partnership for Reform, a conservative policy research group.

Before this, no schools in the UNC system had had a question banned.

The UNC undergraduate application asks students to describe an aspect of their identity and how it has shaped their life, but answering the question is optional.
