CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – By fall 2023, many campus buildings will have new One Card readers if everything goes according to plan.

Scott Myers, Executive Director of Auxiliary Services tells Carolina Week that the new card readers will use “tap” technology which will provide contactless access and is more secure than magnetic stripe systems.

According to Meyers residence halls will not be affected by the new system.

“This project will not include campus residence halls, which students access using key fobs, or buildings managed by the School of Medicine, which has its own access system.”

The One Card Office encourages students to check the back of their One Cards to confirm compatibility with the new system. This can be done through reviewing the back of the card and looking for specific marks:

“Cards with an “HID Seos” mark on the back of the card already work with tap technology, and no further action is required by card holders. Cards with a “ColorID” or “PROX” mark on the back will not work with the new card readers.

Not all current One Cards are compatible with the new system. One Cards issued within the last three years will be compatible while older cards will need to be replaced. The replacement cards will be reissued at no charge.

In order to retain a One Card, students must electronically sign the One Card Use Agreement, upload an updated One Card photo and bring a valid photo ID to the One Card Office to pick the card.

The One Card Office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Student Stores Building.
