CHAPEL HILL, NC – To celebrate American Indian history and culture, UNC’s American Indian Center is hosting a month’s worth of events for this year’s heritage month.

Established in 1990 under the leadership of president George H.W. Bush, the month of November is officially declared as a time to reflect on and acknowledge the past, present and future contributions of American Indians to our country.

Jalyn Oxendine is the historian at Carolina Indian Circle. “We get mistreated a lot by the Carolina community and the University. And like in my head, I’m just like, please give us this month to just listen to us and let us have our space because we have no safe spaces on this campus besides the safe spaces we create for ourselves.”
