CHAPEL HILL, NC – Chapel Hill, N.C. – The Town of Chapel Hill put out a press release outlining their plans for Franklin Street closures on October 31, the town’s first Halloween celebration since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Town government outlined three important points to consider for anyone going out on Halloween.

Road Closures

First were the road closures on and around Franklin Street. The Town plans to close a section of Franklin Street from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Halloween night to vehicle traffic.

Franklin Street will be closed from Henderson Street to Church Street. Henderson Street is where UNC’s McCorckle place meets the Time-Out Restaurant and the post office. The corner of Church Street and Franklin Street is home to Target.

The town also warns that sections of Columbia Street and other local roads like Rosemary Street may also be closed for the duration of the celebration.

Prohibited Items

Next, the press release highlighted some prohibited items during the celebration. They warn that law enforcement officers will be looking out for these things and will ask you to dispose of any of the following, if found:

  • open containers of alcohol
  • weapons, or items that look like or could be used as weapons
  • drones

Safe Partying

Finally, the town also made a point to share resources with the community about how to celebrate while minimizing risk of spreading any illness on the back of COVID-19, monkeypox, and the upcoming flu season.

“We encourage our community to avoid celebrating in large crowds, even outside, and to find other ways to enjoy Halloween,” was said in a statement regarding safety during the October 31 celebration.

Also included was a guide on how to reduce risk of exposures from the Orange County Health Department at www.orangecountync.gov/2917/Guidance-for-Private-Social-Gatherings.
