On October 31, the U.S. Supreme Court will discuss a pair of lawsuits challenging affirmative action at Harvard and UNC chapel hill. Both universities will defend themselves in these multi-year lawsuits filed by the group… Students for fair admissions.

The conservative legal action group includes thousands of rejected applicants, prospective students, and parents who say race and ethnicity should not be considered by schools in the admissions process.

The trial court initially decided in u-n-c’s favor, ruling that the university does not discriminate against white and Asian American students. But the group appealed the case all the way up to the supreme court.

Carolina stands by its admission policies with leaders stating that they adhere closely to constitutional requirements and the high court’s directives. Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz said in a statement that the university “may consider race or ethnicity as one factor among many, but only if a student chooses to share that information.”

Harvard and UNC will each get one hour for oral arguments, and a decision from the supreme court is expected in 2023.
