CHAPEL HILL, NC – The Campus Y partnered with Campus EMS to provide free medical emergency training over the weekend.

During the session, Campus EMS taught participants everything from CPR to basic first aid training such as how to apply a tourniquet, how to administer an EpiPen and more.

However, in the face of a growing national opioid crisis, participants were also taught how to administer Naloxone, more commonly known as Narcan. Narcan is an emergency drug that temporarily reverses opiod overdoses.

According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, there have been more than 28,000 opioid-related deaths in the state since 2000.

According to Campus EMS members like Tessa Buscher, rising cases of opioid overdoses are the primary reason for teaching people how to use Narcan.

“I think it’s important that we teach and understand that Narcan is readily available and it’s not hard to use because it could save someone’s life.”

Narcan is available at the Campus Health and Student Stores Pharmacies without a prescription, free of charge, and anonymously.
