CHAPEL HILL, NC – There are lots of renowned figures spanning UNC-chapel hill’s 232-year history. One of them is Karen parker. The university’s first black woman to enroll and earn an undergraduate degree.
Parker graduated in 1965 with a degree in journalism. At Carolina, she was the editor of the u-n-c journalist. She was active in the civil rights movement, participating in sit-ins and protests and enduring two arrests for civil disobedience. She wrote about the 1963-64 civil rights movement in chapel hill and her own experiences in her diary… Currently in the southern historical collection at Wilson Library. This afternoon during the university day ceremony, she’ll receive a distinguished alumna award.
Other recipients include Nicole bates, Jerry Blackwell, f. Dubois Bowman, and Charles “chuck” Robbins.
