CHAPEL HILL, NC – While many restaurants come and go on franklin street, one restaurant continues to stand the test of time with a milestone anniversary. The Carolina Coffee Shop turns one hundred years old!
Whether you are starting the day with a cup of coffee, need a quick bite, many visit Carolina Coffee Shop, but why is it so worth it?
“It’s the oldest restaurant in Carolina, so I had to check it out, good experience nice people,” said Sheena Mill, a visitor to Chapel Hill for the first time.
One hundred years old worth of history. Carolina Coffee Shop opened in 1922 and some have visited for decades. UNC alum Butch Richardson holds the shop close, “Tradition, yeah we’ve been eating here for close to fifty years.”
For newcomers…the first thing that grabs them is the food. “I really enjoyed it, so the close proximity, I keep coming back and I have not been disappointed by a single menu item yet,” says current UNC student Matthew Troyer.
The restaurant serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks. For others, it’s the atmosphere. “The noise, the students with the laptops, there is families, so it’s really to me generationally, there’s a depth of generational knowledge and legacy here,” remarked UNC professor Dr. Ashley Bryant.
The place might even inspire years ahead of its time. “I was asking her if she wanted to be a tar heel, and she screamed, so maybe,” Sheena Mill said laughing looking at her daughter.
The shop is continuing to gain new and old friends and keep an open door for the last one hundred years and hopefully one hundred more.
