Project Literacy plays a role in empowering people with literacy through advocacy, education, and volunteer work. We strive to address the broad issue of illiteracy or literacy deficiency which finds itself at the intersection of a variety of systemic discrimination-based issues such as class, race, mental and physical ability, and language bias. Education about literacy, the impacts of illiteracy, and the unjust systems that perpetuate literacy deficiency is a core part of Project Literacy’s mission. We hope to educate our members and the larger UNC community on the implications and effects of literacy on a person’s life. Furthermore, through our partnership with the local non-profit Orange Literacy, we help connect UNC students as volunteer tutors to adults in the community seeking help with improving their literacy skills. Ultimately, Project Literacy is a community of people who learn, grow, serve, and have fun together.
