For over sixty-five years, the Campus Y has sponsored Carolina Kickoff (CK) as an informal introduction to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for 175 incoming first-year students. Each year, 40 counselors endeavor to paint a total picture of campus life in just three days, introducing students to social justice and student life at Carolina. University officials such as the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, and representatives from the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs offer advice on how to best take advantage of the school’s resources and new initiatives.
We invite professors from a range of departments, as well as members of career services and counseling and wellness, to provide tips on how to be a successful student at UNC. Students have the opportunity to sign up for student organizations, watch performances from some of Carolina’s best student groups, and learn cheers for UNC sporting events from Ramses, the UNC mascot. Students move into their residence halls early, before camp starts.
Throughout the year, CK plans for camp by contacting speakers, raising funds, and finalizing camp programs. Counselors also organize events to help raise money for camp and spread awareness about social justice issues. One of our main initiatives is to advise the past year’s campers on how to complete a successful first-year at Carolina.
