RBP Group Fall Potluck

Members of the RBP Group (Aleman and Dominguez Labs) got together for a Fall Potluck.  The spread was amazing: José’s seafood paella, Gilbert’s momos, , Alli’s rice, Raquel’s maduros, Kwame’s cornish hens, Sarah’s mac & cheese, Grant’s hot wings, Conner’s soupy rice, Michael’s hot sauce, the baby back ribs I made, and Bryan & Issa’s flan/cake combo. Cheers to Charlese!

This summer, we were so pleased to host Charlese Miller, undergrad from Georgia State University, as a Carolina Summer Fellow!  This is a great program for undergraduates interested in research and professional development. It has been wonderful having Charlese in the lab. And thanks to Matt for serving as Charlese’s bench mentor.

Bowling Tournament with Pharmacology Labs

During this hot summer, what could be more fun (and cool) that a bowling tournament amongst 3 labs from the 4th floor of Genetic Medicine Building. Members of the Dohlman Lab, the Dominguez Lab, and the Aleman Lab competed for a prize.  There’s some real bowlers amongst us; I was not one of them!

The Winner:

Sam, member of another lab entirely 🙂

Thank you!

Today we had our last lab meeting of the Spring 2023 semester. Sai, Grace, and Cornelius are wrapping up their final semester of undergrad and will be moving on to the next stages of their careers. Thank you for all your contributions and findings. We will miss you all!

A lab first

Sai presented her first, and the lab’s first, poster today. Sai has been investigating how GUSB mRNA is regulated. GUSB encodes ß-glucuronidase, an enzyme involved in normal lysosomal function.

Welcome Matt!

Big welcome to Matt Mehlenbacher, the lab’s new postdoc. Matt brings his expertise in metalloproteins and protein-protein interactions to the study of RNA regulation.  Glad to have you join us!

We are hiring!

We are seeking a research specialist, preferably with flow cytometry experience. You can view the job posting here.

The person in this position will work with primary cells and cell lines to help us investigate the role of iron in RNA regulation.
